The CleanAIR Initiative

A student-led effort to take school sports out of Delhi's smog months.

Delhi's winter air regularly reaches "severe" and "hazardous" levels, yet zonal, state and national school tournaments were still scheduled between November and January. Through the CleanAIR Initiative, Nysa and ten other student-athletes asked the Delhi High Court to require a sports calendar that avoids that window. Nysa is the lead petitioner, first-named in the case.

The calendar governs 250,000+ students across CBSE, ICSE, ISSO and SGFI schools. The case is Nysa Bedi and Ors. v. Government of NCT of Delhi, W.P.(C) 17566/2025.

Outcome

On 3 August 2026 the High Court disposed of the petition. The Delhi government had handed the Court its Directorate of Education circular of 6 July 2026, setting out the Delhi State School Games 2026-27 schedule, and the petitioners accepted that this resolved their grievance. Bar & Bench reports the games will now finish by October, before the peak pollution months.

  1. Nysa and the other petitioners begin building the case that compulsory outdoor school sports in the worst-air months put student-athletes at risk.

  2. The petition is filed in the Delhi High Court, reported by PTI and others the same day.

  3. At the first hearing the Court asks the Directorate of Education to explain why outdoor school sports continue in the most polluted months. The same day, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) writes to the Chief Secretaries of Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh urging them to postpone November and December sports competitions. Its letter cites the Supreme Court's concern, in the separate M.C. Mehta air-pollution case, about children playing sport in poor air.

  4. The Delhi government tells the Court it cannot amend the annual sports calendar merely because of pollution.

  5. The Directorate of Education circulates the Delhi State School Games 2026-27 schedule. Most games fall between 16 August and 19 October 2026, and the circular says winter air pollution and court orders were weighed in drawing it up.

  6. The High Court closes the petition.

  7. CAQM issues Advisory No. 18 to the same four governments, repeating for 2026 that no physical sports competitions should be scheduled in November and December. The Bridge reports it.

In the media

Nysa spoke about the case in TV interviews on India Today, CNBC-TV18 and CNN-News18. It was also covered by Bar & Bench, PTI, The Bridge and many other national and international dailies and news channels.

NirmaanSetu

Helping construction workers claim the welfare benefits they are already owed.

In February 2025 Nysa co-founded NirmaanSetu to register construction workers with their State Welfare Board, which unlocks benefits, employment support and legal awareness. The team has helped 700 workers understand the registration process, both in person and through its website and Instagram. It created checklists in 4 languages to share with the workers and provided financial literacy to 2,000+ workers so that they can secure themselves and their families.

The NirmaanSetu website runs in English, Hindi, Tamil and Bengali, checks which schemes a worker qualifies for, and takes registration requests from workers directly.

During one of the team's on-site drives, the volunteers found and reported bugs on the Welfare Board's web portal, which had been down for registrations, renewals and claims since the first week of May 2026. On 15 July 2026 the Delhi Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board issued an office order that excludes the outage period when counting deadlines for registration, renewal and claims, which gave relief to 200,000+ construction workers in Delhi.
